When Does Colic Develop?

Brauer Natural Medicine - When Does Colic Develop

When Does Colic Develop?

Welcoming a newborn into the world is such an exciting time. Lots of joy, delight and love for the whole family. But what about the other emotions, like stress and the worrying? At Brauer Natural Medicine, we understand that your bub’s health is at the top of your priority list. Keeping your baby happy and healthy is the number one thing on your mind.

One of the biggest hardships for parents is watching your newborn experience colic. Nobody wants to see their baby upset, let alone for hours a day. It can be disheartening and can create doubts that we are ‘doing parenting right’. Getting colic is not something you can easily control. It’s very common for babies between two and four weeks to enter into a colicky phase.

What Are the Chances of My Baby Developing Colic?

Colic is a perfectly normal stage of your baby’s development. 1 in 3 babies will experience colic1 and it is equally as common in both boys and girls. It is also as likely to occur in babies who are breastfed as it is in those who are formula-fed. If a previous child experienced colic it does not increase the likelihood of your new baby having it. No two babies are the same, so it’s mostly down to chance.

Should I Take My Baby to the Doctor if He/She Has Colic?

Colic isn’t something to worry about if you can avoid it. Plenty of babies experience colic every day, along any part of the severity spectrum. If your bub is showing some unusual symptoms, such as vomiting, crying in an unfamiliar tone or pitch, has blood in their stool or drinks a lot less than usual, then it would be worth visiting the doctor for a check-up.

On another note, if you’re feeling stressed and a little helpless, it will do no harm to visit a healthcare professional - for you or your baby! You might learn something new and get some peace of mind.

Remember that when you’re stressed your little one can pick up on it, which won’t make them feel any better. So try to keep relaxed and as well-rested when you can. Our Brauer Naturals Stress Range offers some homeopathic stress remedies if you feel you need some assistance to relax and unwind.

Will My Baby Grow Out of Colic?

Don’t fret - colic doesn’t last forever! Colicky behaviour begins at around three weeks of age and tends to peak at six weeks. After this time, the crying and fussing should happen less and less often. Eventually, the colic phase will end and your baby will have outgrown it.

Parenting a newborn is one of life’s many joys. But if your newborn gets colic then things can be a little harder to manage. At Brauer Natural Medicine, we recognise that looking after a baby can be worrisome, as well as wonderful. If you’re looking to give bub some temporary relief, our Baby & Child Range provides natural remedies to common ailments your little one may face. Brauer Baby & Child Colic includes ingredients traditionally used to relieve some of the symptoms of colic.
