What is colic?
At Brauer, we understand that babies don’t come with an instruction manual. Sometimes it can be hard to pinpoint exactly what’s wrong, especially when you’re a new parent! If your baby is constantly crying for no obvious reason then there is a chance they might have colic. Colic is characterised as excessive, frequent crying in babies who appear to be otherwise health and well fed(1).
What are the signs and symptoms of colic?
Colic symptoms and severity is different for every baby. Some babies only show mild symptoms of colic, such as restlessness in the evening. Whereas other babies may experience long periods of crying and irritability.
Some other common symptoms of colic include crying for more than three hours a day, loud tummy rumblings, pulling their legs up to their chest, inconsolable crying, passing wind or faeces around the time the crying stops(2).

But why is my baby crying?
Some babies cry more than others, that’s just the way it is. Unfortunately, your baby’s upset can’t be completely explained as babies cannot tell us what is wrong. Because there is no confirmed cause of colic, people often suggest medical reasons for colicky behaviour, such as gastrointestinal discomfort, nappy rash or allergies and intolerances. These things may irritate your baby, but when it comes to colic, no single symptom has been proven to directly cause it.
Having a newborn baby can bring lots of excitement. However, parents can also find it a bit tricky when having to navigate some common baby ailments, especially if you’re new to parenthood.
If you're looking to relieve the symptoms of colic for your baby, Brauer Baby & Child Colic is a mild-tasting, 100% sugar-free liquid formulated with Chamomile, traditionally used in Western herbal medicine to help reduce abdominal bloating, cramping and spasm associated with infant colic.
