At Brauer Natural Medicine, we understand that giving your baby medication can be easier said than done. You can't just sit them down and explain why taking certain remedies may help them - well, you can, but you'll find the conversation very one sided.
In fact, many parents find that after battling with their squirming and often unhappy bub, they are not even sure how much medication was taken! It's easy to understand why most parents cite giving their kids medicine as one of the hardest things they've had to do.
Luckily, there are a number of different ways you can administer infant and baby probiotic products and a healthcare practitioner should always be consulted before giving them any new medication.
How to Administer Probiotics to Babies
If you're one of the lucky parents who has an easy-going baby when it comes to taking medication there are plenty of options. For babies consuming solids (usually over 6 months), simply mix the recommend dosage of powder using the measuring spoon provided with cooled boiled water, formula or even into their food. Taste-free probiotics are a great idea particularly for infants, as it may reduce the likelihood of them rejecting it.
If your little one is breastfeeding and hasn't started solid foods yet, try dabbing small amounts of probiotic powder onto your moistened nipple prior to feeding until the recommended dosage is consumed.
Alternatively, for bottle fed babies, try putting the recommended dosage into their formula. Simply add it to the bottle, shake well and go on feeding your baby as normal.
What Happens if They Spit Up or It Comes Out of Their Mouth?
When it comes to giving medicine to babies, getting all of the recommended doses into their mouths can be a never ending battle. Sometimes you win, but sometimes you'll lose (and have to add your favourite shirt into the laundry pile again).
If you're not sure if your baby has ingested their recommended dosage of infant probiotic powder, wait until they are due for their next dose and try again.
It can be hard to tell exactly how much they've taken in and waiting until the next dose is due will give your little one a chance to calm down and relax, as spitting up can be a little traumatic for them.
As we all know, every precious bundle is unique, so it may take a little while to find a solution that works for both you and baby. Don't forget to ask for a little help when you need it and always refer to your health care provider if you have any health concerns.
